Coalville vs. Olney 15.12.2018
Olney were on the road again on Saturday to play their last match of the first half of their league programme. The weather was not ideal for playing with a stiff wind combined with near freezing rain. Olney kicked off and the elements soon made it clear that we were not to be entertained with an open , handling, game.
The first score came from an attack down the wing, producing a try for Coolville's Matt Chamberlain. Not converted, Coalville 5, Olney 0, after 5 mins.
Olney were in with a chance when they were awarded successive penalties and tried to set up their backs. The play was spoiled by knock on, cold hands no doubt the cause. The penalty count was clearly in the visitor's favour and they put points on the scoreboard when they finally elected to kick for goal. Jordan Letts was successful and reduced the deficit to Coalville 5, Olney 3, ( 20 mins.).
Coalville kicked off to restart but the ball failed to go ten, giving the visitors a scrum on the centre spot. They won the ball and shipped it out to their three's. The backs were offside and a penalty gave Coalvillle possession. The kick to touch gave Coalville a lineout on Olney's '22' and they won the ball to attack down the blind side. They forced over for a try in the corner by Eddie Rotstein, converted by George Blackburn, Coalville 12, Olney 3, (26 mins.).
Olney were attempting, still, to open up the game and a knock on from the usually safe hands of Olney's Marcus Goss, who was fighting off frost bight, denied a possible score. Olney benefitted from the penalty count to take a kick to goal when the situation was appropriate and Letts was on target to keep the visitor's in touch Coalville 12, Olney 6, This concluded the first half

HALF TIME SCORE: COALVILLE 12, OLNEY 6.
Coalville kicked off to start the second half and Olney ran the ball in their backline. The home defence was able to quell the attack and gained a line out on their '22'. They won the ball and kicked to touch but the kick was outside the '22'. A number of attempts to string together passes in the backlines , on both sides, failed as the conditions deteriorated. As the second half progressed there were periods when the defence, from both sides, was tested near the goal lines.
The home side had introduced their sub's in the first half and Olney were beginning to edge the contest between the packs. Receiving the ball from a penalty kick they counter attacked and carried play to the home '22'. They were halted for another knock on, but won the ball against the head. Coalville were caught offside and the visitor's ran the ball from the penalty. The home side managed to wrestle the ball out of the breakdown and put it into touch. Olney won the lineout and drove for the goal line, they forced over and lock forward, Joe O'Conner touched down. Letts added the conversion with a good effort from wide out. Coalville 12, Olney 13.
Olney brought on their subs bringing fresh legs to the forwards.
Coalville kicked off and followed up putting the visitor's goal line under pressure. The Olney forwards and backs joined forces to repel the attack and were fortunate to be awarded a scrum in front of gaol, that they won and cleared to touch. The home side were guilty of conceding penalties that gave further relief to Olney. They managed to gain territorial advantage and took play into the home '22' . From a penalty , Olney took the scrum option and ran the ball culminating in another try for O'Conner, converted by Letts. Coalville 12, Olney 20. This being the final score.

FULL TIME SCORE: COALVILLE 12, OLNEY 20.
