Olney v Stamford

Olney RFC Publicity1 Mar - 19:31

28th February 2026

This week’s guest reporter: Shay Verchuff

A warm welcome to Stamford who we narrowly lost to in the away fixture earlier in the season so hopefully a reverse of that result and more league points for the boys in cerise and French grey today. Legend has it that Stamford was once home to Britain’s most prolific stuttering burglar who unfortunately died in prison. Even there he couldn’t finish his sentence. In the news this week we heard that the man who invented beach footwear for one legged people has gone bust. He told reporters it was a flop

With thanks to our friends at the cricket club who sponsored the game today a decent crowd gathered to witness the spectacle unfold before them. The sides seemed evenly matched with both sides looking to run and Olney indeed showed good intent from a kick return when Ferdi van der Heiden made good ground to then feed Ethan Chambers who ran over from distance. Stamford were content to work their way up the field through a succession of penalties and pressure eventually told when they scored to draw level. Olney were guilty of giving away possession on several occasions either through poor passes or indifferent handling and it was one of these errors which allowed the Stamford full back to capitalise and score wide on the left. One never usually likes to criticise but some sloppy tackling led to Stamford’s third try and we’ll leave it to the players to watch the video to see for themselves how it occurred. Unfortunately this took the score at half time to 7-17.

The second half mirrored the first with a few mistakes creeping in from both sides with Olney conceding penalties to allow Stamford to gain territory and from a catch and drive they extended their lead securing a bonus point in the process. When Olney did get their game plan together it paid dividends and some good work by the forwards forged some space for Arthur Betteridge to burst through at speed and score close to the posts. They then got to within one score when a charge down by Henry Warren gave the home side some hope with a try in the corner. As the game wore on the Olney pack seemed to wear out and took many a backward step which Stamford were quick to exploit. Someone remarked there would be more chance of Oscar Pistorius getting athletes foot than Olney pushing Stamford backwards at scrum time, a little harsh but we knew what he meant. A last gasp try from Stamford dashed Olney’s hopes of a comeback and not even a bonus point for their endeavours of the afternoon. Final score being 19-29 to the visitors.

Overall the result reflected the league positions of the two sides and it gives the coaches enough to work on for the rest of the season. It’s not all doom and gloom, it never is when compared to other things going on around us and the world in general so it’s off to town to try out a new pub near the hospital called the Amputees Arms then retreat to social media to take the pee out of people with skinny jeans and sliders with socks.

With the Steve Howson feature becoming ever popular we are extending it to other club members and the things you may not know about them. First up its Chunk Chandler who, when he retired from the NHS, trained himself up as an amateur taxidermist specialising in small domestic animals, so if you need your pet stuffing then he’s your man.
