Olney v Wellingborough

Olney RFC Publicity2 Mar - 16:18

1st March 2025

This week’s guest reporter: Jenny Tulwortz

Today we welcomed our friends from Wellingborough who travelled down from the frozen north to the warmer climate of lands nearer the equator. An interesting result when we played them earlier in the season which indicates that another tough contest would be on the cards. On the occasion of the sponsor’s and VP’s lunch, a good crowd would be assured on the touchline. On another subject, it was pointed out last week that one of the differences between men and women is that if a woman comes out with the instruction “Smell that!” it will usually be something nice.

A bright sunny afternoon and the masses gathered hoping to be royally entertained. What followed in the first half didn’t quite live up to expectations. Apart from a missed penalty from each side not a lot happened. The clock was the only number moving on the scoreboard and the half drifted to a close with both sides ending the first forty minutes with no points on the board. The crowd in the east stand amused themselves with some dark humour and Tebs had a hip flask with a lovely drop of sloe gin in it so it wasn’t all doom and gloom, but even Steve Howson (legend) was without comment. One incident possibly worthy of inclusion is the slight squeal from the ‘Borough prop when Rob Morgan took him from behind.

Things could only get better….and they did. Following an Olney scrum close to the try line, ‘Borough appeared with the ball. A good old chip and chase ensued with the ‘Borough winger winning the race to the touch down wide on the left and putting them 5 points ahead. A penalty from Charlie Hicks narrowed the gap and Olney then had a spell of possession in the ‘Borough 22. After being stuck close to the line and unable to find a way through, the ball was flipped out wide to Henry Warren who rounded the defence for the try. The ‘Borough defence is notoriously hard to crack and Olney found it difficult to find any gaps. A few penalties conceded and ‘Borough were at the other end scoring again after a break from the back of a powerful scrum and the lead changed once more. Another Hicks penalty put the home side 1 point clear but one was wondering if this would be enough. Towards the final minutes ‘Borough upset the man with the whistle and were reduced to 14. With the penalty awarded, Olney opted for the scrum on the 22 in front of the posts. After winning the scrum the ball came out quickly to Struan Brooks who made the most of the extra man to score in front of the happy band in front of the hut. With the conversion it took the final score to 20-13 in favour of Olney.

Well done to Olney and hard luck to Wellingborough who we look forward to meeting again next season. Always good fun on and off the pitch. Martin Mcloughlin (another wise old legend who has been told he’d get a mention one day!) has just visited the doctors. He’s fit and well but feels he should warn people that the Dyson ball vacuum is a slightly misleading name.

Referring to our sponsors earlier, the club would not function as it does without their generous support, so when looking for jobs or services please look first to those businesses and individuals. It could be anything from buying a house, financial advice, fencing or classic cars to electricians, laundry or even if you’ve died. There’s probably everything covered by them somewhere. Lastly, we heard that Mrs Harris recently had to apologise to the host for the incident at a gender reveal party when Mr Harris thought that everyone had to participate.
