Peterborough v Olney - 22nd October 2022

Peterborough v Olney - 22nd October 2022

Olney RFC Publicity23 Oct 2022 - 18:47

This week’s guest reporter: Mustafa Leek

Firstly we must mention the Movember charity. The players have been encouraged to take part in this and it involves growing a moustache for the month of November. The aim is to raise awareness of men’s health, particularly testicular cancer, so we should support them in this and hope as many as possible get behind the cause and join in. Expect a weird and wonderful array of hairy top lips in the coming weeks. For those players who are not as hirsute under the nose there will be a selection of false ones for hire behind the bar so you don’t feel left out.

On the road again for a trip to Peterborough with a conservative approach which, judging by Conservatives this week meant several changes from the previous match but still a strong side hopeful of a victory against a side who sit alongside us in mid-table. Boro’ had the better of the first moments and showed good strength in the pack to test the Olney defence, which held firm. When Olney did get their hands on the ball it was time to open the game up somewhat and a good run from deep from Struan Brooks saw him and James Gardner exchange passes down the right wing with Brooks scoring the try. The next score again was worked up the right flank with Gardner cutting in for the try. More running rugby gave veteran speedster Mike Chapman the chance of a break on halfway who linked with Ethan Chambers to then score under the posts. This showed that Olney are always better with ball in hand playing the expansive game. A ruck on the Boro’ 22 was nicked by Chambers who darted over for his second of the day and the bonus point try for Olney and the score to 26-0 in their favour after the conversion by Elliot Simpson. It was far from one way traffic though and Boro’ always looked capable of a comeback and the defence eventually cracked to allow their forwards a chance to drive over. The final action of the half came when hooker Tommy Herman drove over himself following a lineout 5m from the line. Half time score 5 – 33.

The half time team talk for Boro’ should have been, and probably was, to keep the ball with the forwards and away from the Olney runners. This had the desired effect as they powered over from close range following a quick tapped penalty. The advantage was with the home side for the early part of the half and shortly after the forwards were rewarded again with a third try wide on the right. Boro’ were still on the attack and testing the Olney defence at every play with the lads in cerise seemingly unable to get their hands on the ball to open the game up once more. Things did change somewhat when Boro’ had a man in the bin for a deliberate knock on when Olney were in 22. Another yellow for a dangerous tackle reduced the home side to 13 men. However, they stuck to the game plan and scored again close to the final whistle for a bonus point try of their own to leave the final score at 24 – 33. An entertaining game all round and a good result for Olney but credit to Peterborough for closing down the score in the second half. Always good to celebrate a good victory as some may have witnessed later on the market place when the bus got back!!

Mr Harris has been doing a lot of research lately and has discovered that you can tell a lot about a woman by her hands. For example, if they are gripping you tightly round the throat she is probably slightly upset.
