BARKERS BUTTS vs. OLNEY 24. 11.2018
Olney travelled North West for their fourth round fixture in the Midlands Cup, against Barkers Butts, on Saturday. The home side kicked off and soon put their mark on the game winning the first scrum against the head. They were awarded a penalty just outside the visitor's '22' line and their scrum half, Bradley Southwell was on target for Barkers B's to open the scoring Barkers Butts 3, Olney 0. ( 5 mins.).
From the restart Olney counter attacked but lost possession when they knocked on. Barkers B's kicked for territory and Olney ran the ball back. The ball was put into touch and Olney won the lineout. They moved the ball to their backline and Stu Livesey made a probing run into the home '22'. At the breakdown the home side were penalised and Jordan Letts converted to level the score, 3 - 3 (10 mins).
Barkers B's kicked to restart and the ball was promptly returned. Both sides were attempting to use the touchline to gain territory and Olney had the edge in the line outs. This resulted in Barkers B's moving their defence too far up and conceding penalties for 'offside'. A penalty to the visitors, on the home 5m. line was run, the ball ended up in the hands of Jake Deighton, on the visitor's left wing who evaded the home defence to touch down in the corner. There was no conversion, Barkers Butts 3, Olney 8. (18 mins.).
Barkers B's kicked off and the ball rolled into touch for a line out to the visitors. Olney won the ball and the home forwards conceded a free kick. The ball was kicked to the visitor's left wing where Olney's Marcus Goss made good ground to take the ball on the full. The home defence covered well and wrapped him up gaining a penalty at the maul. There was a period of play littered with penalties that culminated in Olney losing the services of Taylor French their hooker, injured foot and Barkers B's having their No. 8, Jamie Bethell sin binned. Dan Seal came on for French.
As the first half was coming to the end Olney gathered a loose ball and kicked towards the home goal line. They gained put in at a scrum 5m. out and won the ball to feed their backline. Stu Livesey threaded his way through the opposition and scored a try , converted by Letts, Barkers Butts 3, Olney 15. The referee blew for half time.

Olney kicked off for the second half but the ball went over the dead ball line, giving the home side put in at a scrum on the centre spot. Olney pushed over the ball but not to the ref's satisfaction. The scrum was reset and the ref. penalised Olney. The home side ran the ball but knocked on. The visitors changed their forwards, Mungo Ryan replacing Glen White. Barkers B's also made a substitution in their pack.
The penalty count began to rise again and the home side took the advantage, running the ball whenever possible. Olney were unfortunate when Mungo Ryan suffered a dislocation that terminated his short match time. Glen White returned.
Olney had an opportunity to extend their lead when, awarded a penalty for 'offside'. Letts was just wide with his attempt to convert. Barkers B's were similarly frustrated when a penalty against Olney, close to the visitor's goal line, was run but kept out by good defending. Eventually the home side were rewarded for their efforts they gained possession inside the visitor's '22' and used their backline to put Sam Finley in for a try , converted by Southwell, to close the difference to Barkers Butts 10, Olney 15. (28 mins.)
The visitors kicked off and followed up to gain possession. They drew in the home defence and were awarded a scrum between the opposition '10' and '22' lines. The ball was won and fed to the backs who set Deighton for a try, no conversion, Barkers Butts 10, Olney 20. ( 30 mins.).
The final minutes were played out in much the same fashion as the rest of the second half. Olney were reduced to 14 men, David Rainbow being shown a yellow card (taking one for the scrum). The home side added another try by Gareth Collier, not converted, Barkers B's 15, Olney 20. There was no further score before close of play.
