On Monday, The Club welcomed more than 75 girls from Olney Middle School and Lavendon School for RugbyFest - an afternoon of rugby fun and games specifically aimed at girls.
Throughout the afternoon, the girls from Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in eight rugby-themed activities, including Rugby Rounders, Rob the Nest and Rugby Tag. It was fantastic to see everyone getting stuck in, learning new skills and, most importantly, enjoying themselves — even if the weather was typically “rugby-esque”!
The afternoon ended with an awards ceremony, where medals and rugby balls were presented to those girls who had particularly impressed the organisers. Awards recognised hard work, determination, attitude and overall contribution.
The session was organised by Mark Bundy, our Girls Rugby Lead, alongside Jon Henkes, RFU MK Schools Rugby Manager, and the MK Schools Sports Partnership. Support on the day also came from coaches across both the Mini & Junior and Women’s sections, including next season’s Ladies Captain, Ellie Hiscock, who said:
“It was such an amazing day — so positive, and hopefully some girls will start coming down to training! Looking forward to another one. Well done to everyone who organised it.”
This was just one of several initiatives The Club is running to help grow girls’ rugby off the back of the success of England’s Red Roses. We are one of the clubs supporting local schools with their rugby programmes through the MK Alliance, whilst also running girls-only training sessions on Tuesday evenings in the season and some summer evening fun events
Next season will also see girls’ rugby return to our Mini & Junior Sunday programme — something we are incredibly excited about. If you would like to get involved, please get in touch - Girlsrugby@olneyrfc.co.uk
And we are already looking forward to the next school’s session, so if your school would like to take part, we would love to hear from you — we might even be able to bring the session to your school!
