Olney Colts’ Success Built on Strong Foundations
Olney Colts’ success is no accident. It is the result of several strong foundations coming together to create what is arguably one of the best club Colts teams in the country.
First and foremost, player development sits at the heart of the club. Many of the Colts have progressed through Olney’s minis and junior sections, playing together for years. This continuity has fostered deep understanding, trust and cohesion on the pitch. The players are happy in their roles and share a powerful sense of belonging to the club.
That journey has culminated in a squad with serious pedigree: one England representative, two players involved in England camps, ten players in the Northampton Saints Academy, five East Midlands County players, four Buckinghamshire County players and one Midlands County representative. The squad is genuinely packed with talent from top to bottom.
Secondly, the coaching & support structure has been a major contributor to the Colts’ rise. Head Coach Chris Denoven explains:
“Fundamentally we are here to make the players better players, but also better people. This is a player-centric environment built on humility, humour and high standards.
The group are always respectful of the club, the people who volunteer and work here, match officials, the opposition and, most importantly, each other.
The lads work hard to be the fittest and fastest players, with a skill set to match and a drive to play a relentless style of rugby. We’re really lucky at Olney RFC to have first-class facilities and pitches, and everyone works tirelessly to give the lads the best rugby experience possible, from coaches and S&C specialists to physios, first aiders, sports therapists and our kit man.
We also have an excellent social environment for players and parents alike, and we always look to give the lads senior playing opportunities.”
Finally, success itself has bred belief. Having already gone deep in national competition last season, the Colts now expect to compete at that level. That confidence, combined with thorough preparation and strong unity, explains why Olney RFC continue to be such a formidable force in the National U18s Cup.
All eyes now turn to the 18th Jan, as Olney welcome Gordano RFC to the club in what promises to be another compelling chapter in their season so far….
