Match report by Steve Micklewright

Olney ladies continued their improvement with a hard fought win at Moseley on Sunday. Electing to kick up the hill in the first half the away side managed to exert pressure on their hosts and keep them in their own half with some fierce tackling and good support play.

After 10 minutes and being pinned in their own 22 Moseley eventually chose to kick to clear their lines but only found Lizzie Adam in open space. The full back collected comfortably and sprinted around the home team’s defence to dot down under the posts and fly half Jen Miles duly slotted the conversion.

The rest of the first half continued in similar vein with the Olney forwards keeping their counterparts under pressure with some strong scrummaging and determined effort at the breakdown. Moseley however did look dangerous with ball in hand and on several occasions almost broke the Olney line but good team defence held firm.

Good handling and interplay between forwards and backs showed the improvement of the Olney team when they are able to field a full side and continued pressure close to the Moseley line resulted in 2 more tries for the speedster Adam. Half Time: Moseley 0 pts Olney 17pts

Olney knew that keeping the home side out for the first part of the 2 nd half would give them a great opportunity for victory but indecision at the re-start left them under pressure in their own 22 and after only 5 minutes the Birmingham side reduced the deficit with a well worked try which was then converted. This however gave the Pink Ladies the wake-up call they needed. The pack was dominating in the scrum and giving good attacking ball to No 8 Aisha Thornton and scrum half Nikki Moore to use and the Olney back line put some good moves together to work up the pitch to create scoring opportunities.

In a purple patch in the middle of the 2 nd half Olney scored 2 more tries, scored again by Lizzie Adam , to put the game to bed but still Moseley refused to lay down and came back hard in the last quarter. As the breakdown descended into a bit of a free for all the Olney forwards maintained their discipline and kept the home team at bay and despite their best efforts the home side could not break the line again as Olney ran out winners by 29pts to 7pts.

A good hard fought game the Olney victory was based on a solid all round team effort and the pace of the backs, especially Lizzie Adam and Charlotte “Chop” Armitage who was playing her last game for the team before moving away from the area.
