Some positive signs in a difficult match

A warm day at Doff’s field saw the newly promoted Kenilworth arrive to take on the Olney Ladies. An emotional start to the afternoon saw the teams have a minute’s silence to honour Joe Dorrell who sadly passed away this week and will be missed by all at the club.

The game started evenly with possession going back and forth between the teams until a good line break from Lianne O’Reilly gave the home side a lift. Unfortunately despite a scrum and a penalty Kenilworth’s defence held strong and Olney were left without points.

With ball in hand Kenilworth’s attack put a lot of pressure on Olney’s defence in the home side's 22. Some great defending and a good clearance kick from Jennie Miles saw the pressure relieved briefly as the ball went out on Kenilworth’s 10m line.

The away side’s attacking pressure continued and despite some great defence from Scarlet Donne a Kenilworth line out on the 5m led to a hard run that saw their centre go over for the 1st try of the game (0-7). This was quickly followed by their 2nd (0-12).

A turned over scrum on halfway gave Olney great possession and another great run from O’Reilly led to a great gain in territory and eventually a penalty on the 22 which was put into the corner for a lineout. Play continued in the 5 metre area until a great run from Lianne and pass from Scarlet gave Jennie the ball who with some quick feet stepped the defence to score under the posts (7-12).

Despite some great defensive chasing from Charlotte Denny, Kenilworth scored again shortly after (7-19).

The rest of the game continued with strong defence and attack from Olney and Kenilworth but unfortunately for the home side they couldn’t convert this pressure into points until near the end of the 2nd half when a great passage of play from the whole team saw Olivia Fletcher break the line with a great run to go over for the home side's 2nd try with only a post standing in the way of the conversion. Final score was 12-45.

We were really pleased to see some more new additions to the team on the pitch this week. Hannah Anthony at Flanker, Olivia Fletcher on the wing and Sarah Lamming at centre. As well as welcoming back Bobby Jenkins who has been at university and Nikki Moore coming back from an injury.
