Ladies make a brilliant start to their season

With the wind at their backs Olney kicked off and after some good defence regained the ball. Some good phases of play and positive runs were rewarded by an early score by Lianne O’Reilly which was converted by Jennie Miles (7-0).

A mistake from Olney at the restart allowed ONs to break through the defensive line and get to within 5 metres of the Olney try line. With continued pressure and another couple of phases ON’s went over to score in the corner (7-5).

The game settled down with some good play from both sides and a good period of position saw ONs once again into Olney’s 22. A good turn over allowed Jennie to clear Olney’s lines and a good chase and tackle from Erin Garvey put pressure on ONs. Unfortunately the rest of the Olney defence was slow to organise and ONs made a strong run down the line to score their second under the posts (7-12).

A deep kick from Jennie to restart the game was taken well by ONs but good pressure by the Olney defence led to a great turnover and some good pattern play led to a great run from Charlotte Denny who went over for Olney’s 2nd try, which Jennie converted to retake the lead (14-12).

Play continued and a great break from Erin saw her pass the ball to Lianne who then offloaded to Charlotte who beat 3 players to score in the corner (19-12). Charlotte then went on to finish her hat trick just before half time leaving the half time score 26-12.
A very disjointed 2nd half due to frequent injuries and a pitch move made it difficult for either team to get any momentum and the teams getting cold lead to many handling errors and scrums.

There were some strong runs from Fleur Shakespeare, Charlotte and Lianne and a great break from Erin almost led to a try from Jen Micklewright. The sides were locked at 0-0 in the 2nd half until the very end where an Olney penalty gave Kirsty Wilson the opportunity to go over the line in the last play of the game. Final score 33-12.

Jakki McCone had an excellent game in a new position of Fullback and it was great to see Leanne Britain back in the team.
And finally a massive Thank You to Katie Bills and Kirsty Wilson from St. Neots who stepped into our team at the last minute to help us out. We wish them and their team every luck in the coming season.
