OLNEY vs. PINLEY Sat. 11th. Nov. 2017.
Olney were at home, in a league fixture with Pinley RFC, on Saturday. They were assured of good support, the match being preceded by the former players reunion lunch. Before the kick off the players, supporters and VIP's assembled on the pitch, to observe a two minutes silence in recognition of Remembrance Day.
Olney kicked off in perfect conditions and immediately gained a line out near the Pinley '22'. Wining the ball the pack drove for the line and the visitors knocked on 'in goal'. This gave Olney a scrum 5m out, The home pack won the ball and following a strong carry by Ryan Hammett, Ollie Francis touched down, Kieran Manson kicked the conversion, Olney took the lead 7 - 0 , after two mins.
From the restart Olney were awarded a penalty for Pinley pulling down in a ruck. Some 'out of order' comment caused the referee to reverse his decision and the penalty was given in the visitor's favour.
With fifteen minutes on the clock an altercation involving the home number 8 Gareth Cahill and Pinley's number 2 being yellow carded. The penalty was given against Olney and the visitors gained a lineout on the home '22'.
A certain amount of frustration was evident when Pinley were unable to turn any possession into points. Olney on the other hand were gradually taking a grip on the game and when they were back to full strength, with the return of Carhill to the action, they gained their next score. From a line out on the visitor's '22' they won the ball and drove the maul. They fed the backs and Manson kicked through to winger Jake Deighton who rounded the opposition cover and touched down under the posts. Manson was on target with the conversion and extended Olney's lead to 14 - 0. (27 mins).
Olney were guilty of giving away a number of penalties and sometimes losing hard earned possession, but they prevented Pinley from scoring. Pinley also made unforced errors and losing the ball, on their throw in at a line out, just outside the home '22', Olney fed their three's. Centre Dave Smith made a big break down the middle, offloaded to Hamish Bull who put winger James Vine in for a well worked try - his debut try for the first team. Manson made the conversion. Olney moved on to 21 - 0 (35 mins.).
There was no further score before the interval. HALF TIME SCORE: OLNEY 21, PINLEY 0.
The second half was difficult to report. With changes due to players replaced by the substitutes for:- tactical reasons, injuries, yellow carded at the referees discretion or unsure of which category they fell into. It was not certain who was on, who was off, or why.
As Olney proceeded to add to their tally and Pinley were unable to conjure up a score, all the subs were used one way or another. The home side racked up a further 45 points. Pinley failed to score! A good result for Olney, in front of a good crowd. Congratulations to Jake Deighton and James Vine for their hat-tricks.
