OADBY WYGGESTONIANS vs. OLNEY Sat. 30 th Sept. 2017.
Olney travelled to Wigston on Saturday to take on Oadby Wyggestonians in their third league match this term. They
had called up some former regulars to fill the gaps but knew they had a game on their hands with Wygg's on their
own patch.
Olney kicked off and had the opportunity to open the scoring with a penalty that was just short.
Following an exchange of penalties and some good defending from both sides, it was 23 mins. before the home side
scored a try in the corner, taken over by their left winger. Their scrum half added the conversion, with an excellent
kick; Wygg's 7, Olney 0.
Olney restarted and play resumed with Wygg's trying to batter their way through the visitor's resolute defence.
Olney made a substitution George Stanton coming off and Jeremiah Shields going on.
The home side manufactured another try, this time in their right hand corner again converted by their '9'.
Wygg's 14, Olney 0 ( 32 mins).
Olney were unable to get on the front foot and conceded a penalty that Wygg's used to gain a lineout 10m. from the
visitor's goal line. They won the ball and drove into the corner for a 'forwards' try. Their '9' added the extras and
extended the lead just on half time.
HALF TIME: WYGGESTONIANS 21 , OLNEY 0
Wygg's kicked off and Olney knocked on in their '22'. The home pack won the ball, at the ensuing scrum, and fed
their three's who added an unconverted try by their centre to extend their advantage to 26 - 0, after 2 mins.
Charlie Harris replaced Cam Kok but his stay on the park was short lived when he had to leave the field with a
twisted ankle. The pack was re jigged and Rich Cowan came on at scrum half.
Wygg's were endeavouring to crash through the middle and Olney were committed to defending and suppressing
the home side's lead.
Olney were penalised for a scrummaging offence and Wygg's kicked to touch, for a lineout 5m. from the visitor's
goal line. They won the ball and fed their backs for a try, unconverted, score Wygg's 33, Olney 0. (16 mins.).
Olney gathered their resources and, in the last quarter of the game, they came close to getting some consolation .
However it was not to be. Olney were awarded a penalty in Wygg's '22' and ran the ball. They were close to scoring
when they lost the ball. Wygg's picked up and ran the ball the length of the pitch to score a try in the corner, not
converted 38 - 0 to Wygg's.
It was good to see Brandon Kerr back in action and a pity that he had to leave the field with a blood injury from a
nasty cut on his knee.
