Home side through to next round of Lewis Shield

Olney entertained Brackley at the Rec. on Saturday for the second round of the Lewis Shield Competition. They kicked off and following up claimed the ball from their opposition. The ball reached winger Jake 'Noddy' Deighton who ran in a try to open the score in the first 30 secs! Patch Adamns added the conversion to throw down the gauntlet at 7 - 0.

Brackley had a weight advantage in the forwards and the Olney eight were committed to a strenuous afternoon. From the restart Brackley won a scrum in Olney territory but their attack broke down when they passed the ball into touch. This gave the advantage to the home side with the put in to a scrum inside the visitor's 10m. area. Olney won the ball and good hands in their backline gave right winger, Phil Bowden, just enough space to round the defence and score. Patch Adamns added the conversion increasing Olney's lead to 14 - 0, after 8 mins.

Olney were determined to use the pace of their young backline but were frustrated by some sound defence by the visitors. The home side's attacking strategy kept play in the visitor's half, but it was almost halfway through the first period before the third try, and his second, was added by Bowden, with a perfectly judged chip over the defence that he touched down. The conversion attempt by Adamns hit the upright, and Olney settled for 19 - 0.

From the restart Olney were soon back on the attack and were rewarded when, following some hard work by the pack, they had a penalty inside the Brackley '22' for an offside infringement. The kick was put into touch on the visitor's 5m. line and Olney won the ball and drove the maul over the goal line. Ross Herbert at '6' to touch down in the corner. No conversion, score; 24 - 0, (28 mins.).

Brackley kicked off to restart and Olney conceded a scrum in their own '22'. The visitors won the ball and Olney were obliged to do some resolute defending to soak up the attack. They lost the services of their No.8, Isaac Shields, replaced by sub. Chris Sumner-Smith. Brackley managed their nearest effort to score, forcing over the Olney goal line but the ball was 'held up'.

The threat to Olney's goal line was relieved when Marcus Goss made a break through the Brackley cover and running the ball into their half. Brackley cleared to touch and Olney were back in possession, winning the ball from the line out. They put it out to Deighton who outstripped the visitor's defenders to score his second try, converted by Adamns. This gave Olney a comfortable lead, at half time.

HALF TIME SCORE: OLNEY 31, BRACKLEY 0.

Brackley kicked off for the second half and Olney were quickly into scoring mode, full back, Elliot Simpson running in a try, no conversion, score 36 - 0,(2 mins.).

Olney made a substitution, Craig Smith coming on for Jeremiah Shields. With both the Shields brothers sidelined the balance of bulk had swung further to the visitor's pack.

Olney were determined to run the ball from anywhere on the field and the visitors did well to prevent further scores. The breakthrough finally came halfway through the second half when Olney ran a penalty and the back row attacked the line in unison putting prop Sam Spruce in for a try. This stretched the Olney lead to 41 - 0 ( 22 mins.).

From the restart Olney were awarded a scrum, kick not going '10'. They won the ball and it was shipped out to Bowden who ran from inside Olney's half to touch down, his third of the afternoon, not converted. Score: 46 - 0.

As both sides tired from the conflict and open play gave way to a series of scrums and inconclusive lines out the match reached its conclusion.
