Under 9's Laws of the Game

SUMMARY OF THE RULES FOR UNDER 9'S

Safety - Mouth guards should be worn by all players.

Boots - Players boots must have studs that conform to IRB regulations. Moulded studs are acceptable as long as they have not sharp edges or ridges.

Pitch size - Maximum of 60m by 35m plus 5m for in goal area

Numbers per team - maximum of 9 per team made up of 3 forward (2 props and a hooker) and 6 backs.

Game length - two halves of up to 15 minutes per half is allowed.

Starts/restarts - Game started with a free pass. Opposition must be 7m away.
Receiver of the free pass must be no more than two metres away from the player starting or restarting play.

Scrum - 3 players per side. Uncontested. referee to make mark and call "Crouch, Touch, Pause, Engage". Offside for opposition is 5m back from the hind foot of the scrum.

Lineouts - Two per team in the lineout with another throwing in. Uncontested by both sides. Lineout over when scrum half receives ball. No lifting or supporting. Offside line for opposition is 7m back from the point of the lineout.

Tackle - Tackle must be made below armpit level. Tackler must release the tackled player and move away. Tackled player must release the ball and move away.

Picture - Once tackled the player must release the ball. Any player coming in to play the ball must stay on their feet
 
 
Rucks - Formed when one or more players from each team, who are on their feet and in physical contact, close around the ball on the ground. Open play has ended and offside lines formed. Players must stay on their feet. The ball should not be handled by any player involved in the ruck. The ball can be won by players using their feet. Players must join the ruck from behind the back foot and 'through the gate'.

 Picture - Players must not handle the ball in the ruck but can push it back with their feet. 
 
Mauls - Occurs when the ball carrier is held by one or more opponents, and one or more of the ball carriers team mates bind on to the ball carrier. The maul consists of at least 3 players, the ball carrier and one player from each team. Players must stay on their feet. Players must not collapse the maul. Players must join the maul from behind the back foot and 'through the gate'.

Picture - The maul is formed with two players from one team and one from the other team in contact with eachother around the ball.

Picture - Two situations where a maul has not been formed yet. There is no offside line in both of these situations and therefore players can make contact with the ball from any direction. The next player to come in to contact with the two players around the ball will form the maul. 
 
Off-side - A player is offside if he is
- in front of the ball and interfering with play,
- front of the back foot at a ruck, maul, or scrum

Picture - Players must be 'behind the back foot' to be on side at the ruck, maul or scrum.
 
Try - 5 pts for a try. No conversions. Margin of 30pts finishes the game.

Kicking - there is no kicking in the game.

Advantage - when an infringement occurs the referee should play advantage to the non offending team at every opportunity except when he considers that player safety or an injury must prevent him from doing so.

Substitutions - Rolling subs are permitted. Number of subs should be agreed before the game. Substitutions to be made only during stoppages.
