Buckingham - 21st March 2010
The team at Buckingham played brilliantly, three games and three substantial wins: 7 -2, 4 - 0 and 7-1 (the one try in this game was actually scored by James Thomason as we gave them two players per match as they were short). Again, some great individual performances but also good team play with good backup and passing.

Market Harbough - 21st March 2010
The tournament squad at Market Harborough had a pretty good day. I can definitely say not a single player let us down and we were so very close to winning this tournament.
Tries
Olney 2 – 1 Market Harborough ‘B’ Sam 1, Ben Brear 1
Olney 0 – 1 Old Scouts
Olney 1 – 0 Market Harborough ‘C’ Sam 1
Olney 6 – 0 Rugby Lions Sam 1, Ben Brear 1, Ben Roworth 1, Jacob 2, George 1
We won 3 out of 4 games. A 1 – 0 defeat by Old Scouts meant we just failed to reach the final, where we would have met (and beaten) Bletchley.
Struan grounded the ball over our own line first and then Old Scouts followed up and were given the try, however, we really lost that game because we dropped the ball about 5 times in that match. We could and should have scored 2 or 3 tries. The Old Scouts match just turned out to be the game when the ball did not go to hand. Shame as Old Scout had a draw with Market Harborough ‘C’ so a draw with us would have seen Olney in the final.
I see this tournament as yet more progress. When the kids did get the passing right they looked fantastic and played some really top class entertaining rugby. They also rucked and mauled well at times, a little less so sometimes but on the whole did very well. Georgia Brock was the outstanding player in the tight but was run close Rhys who was very quick to the breakdown. George and William made up the forwards on the day and passionate performances by them, added to the efforts of the squad, saw us retain and win a lot more ball than we lost against sides a lot bigger than us. The forwards are where we will have to front up and stand our ground in the future but if they can provide the platform ( as they did yesterday) I am certain our backs will win many games for us. Rome was not built in a day and it will take more time for kids to get their passing and timing spot on but as I look at the potential in the back line I can’t help but have great confidence.
Defence right across the team was strong, particular mention should go to Jacob, Louis, William and Struan but all kids really played their part. What I liked was if one player did not quite complete their tackle they did hold the attacker up and the other players were on them. A good defensive team performance. Laurence and Isaac were asked to play different positions in different games and adapted well. Isaac had a hunger for the ball and attacked with passion. Ben Roworth did well as scrum half and made several good snipping runs, one resulting in a fine try. We know we need to improve our support play when our scrum half takes off from the base of the scrum and this will come.
In the close games Ben Brear and Sam Dalton were our most potent attacking force and Jacob came into his own with some strong running in the last game. Sam showed outstanding finishing. He outstripped all defences with pure pace and was our top try scorer with 3, despite being subbed off for half of every game. We will need to work on handling skills but when we can put Sam away, with ball securely in hand, we have a real potential match winner here. I all a fine performance by the squad in attack, defence, rucking and mauling. We were so close. A little better ball handling and we would surely have won this tournament. I am not going to complain about that. We are trying to get the kids to pass the ball and they did try hard to do that, sometimes brilliantly, sometime not quite so brilliant. I think we played the best passing rugby of the teams I watched and as execution improves we WILL open up defences.

Sunday 4th October - Bedford fesitival
The standard of all the teams we played was for the most part very good indeed. Barely a single tackle was missed by any side. On a day when no one team stood out we played 5 and won 2. I (Chris) am doing the tries from memory so anyone who would like to correct me please help.

Northampton Old Scouts Lost 1 - 2 try by Zack
Semi Final of the Plate

***Selection Policy***
We currently have between 30 and 40 kids playing for the under 9's every sunday, and therefore with matches being only 9 a side, and most fixtures only being able to accomodate one team, there will always be matches that not everyone gets to go to. We try and deal with this by sticking where we can to the following selection policy :-
-
For tournaments we will send the "A" squad, as decided by the coaches on CURRENT FORM
-
For standard away fixtures, we do not normally choose squad by ability, instead we will endevour to rotate the squads so every player gets the chance to play away.
-
When more than 1 team is invited to away fixtures, either the whole team goes, or just one squad - to ensure that players at home have someone to play
-
We understand it is difficult for parents who have children in other age groups, but it is not fair on the rest of the children for us to make team selection based on this fact, so please do not ask us to do so.
-
Team selections will be posted on the web page, please do not let the whole team down but not telling us in advance if your child can not attend a fixture, that way their place can be offered to another player.
GENERAL INFO
Start times - Please ensure that you have allowed enough time to be on the pitch ready to start by 10.15, for team selections and warm ups, ready for training/matches to start promptly at 10.30. A player turning up late after teams or training groups have been selected is very disruptive for the coaches and to those boys who turned up on time.
Training location - For the next few weeks we will be in the area in front of the cricket club house.
Cancelling training/matches - With an average register of well over 30 kids, I can't ring round everyone if we are forced to cancel sessions due to poor weather etc. I am normally told by 10.00 a.m. latest (after pitch inspections) if anything’s cancelled, and then post it here on this web page. PLEASE PLEASE check this web page before leaving if the weather is very cold, wet or windy.
Registration / RFU Cards / Subs / Socials - Players can try out for two weeks, and then they will have to pay memebership joining fee before It will cost £30 for each player for the year, and a compulsory £10 annual social membership for each adult/parent.(every adult who comes to the club, MUST be a social member - not just one parent). You do not need to bring more photos, or proof of age, if your child was already registered for an RFU card. (see me if you not sure).
If you joined at the beginning of this season, or the very end of last season, you will need to fill in a registration form, and RFU form and also bring 2 passport photos of your child, and proof of their age for checking (passport, birth cert ...). The forms will be available on the night, but it would speed things up for everyone if you could complete them prior to coming down. You will be able to download the forms from this web site from the end of this week.
Kit - All players must have at least a gum shield and studded boots on, before they will be permitted to join in during contact sessions. The official team shirt must be worn during matches. Shorts should be worn during matches, but tracksuit bottoms are recommended to wear over the top during cold weather. PLEASE make sure that you child has enough under garments on to remain warm during very cold spells, and also make sure they have waterproof clothing as well as necessary.
Kit can be bought at the club on Sundays after training session (12-1) during September, either from a stand in the main clubhouse or from the kit room (inside the club house, opposite the gym). Kit will also be on sale on registration night (25th Sept). You can also contact Val directly to order kit ( Val Wells on 01234 711754 or dinglewells18@aol.com )
Head guards and Body Armour are optional, Gum shields are COMPULSARY. All will also be available on registration night, or can be purchased from the sports shop in Newport Pagnell. (Olney fro players get a 10% discount).
CLUBHOUSE - Please note - Everyone is very welcome, and very much encouraged to come back to the club house after training, however please be aware that MUDDY KIT IS NOT ALLOWED IN THE NEWLY REFURBISHED CLUB HOUSE. If you intend to bring your child into the club house, please ensure you bring a clean tracksuit, and make sure they have removed their boots. Also please note that all club users, must be social members in order to comply with licensing laws.
***New players***
We are always interested in hearing from new players. In the first instance, any new players interested in joining should contact Vicki, (vickibeynon@yahoo.co.uk) to check when we are next training/playing at home, and to confirm that we still have space for new players to start immediately. Any new players will be welcome to try out for 2 weeks, free of charge. However in order to join in, All players will need to have at least a gum shield and studded boots, or they will not be allowed on the pitch.
Subs become payable upon a players third session at the club, and will cost £30 for each player for the year, and a compulsory £10 annual social membership for each adult/parent.(every adult who comes to the club, MUST be a social member) |
