Objectives

Our overall objectives are:

· To ensure the safety of all players at all times, whilst accepting that they are taking part in a collision sport

· To create an environment where the boys enjoy their rugby

· To develop skills in training that transfer to the game situation

· To encourage team-work over individual play

                          Flanker Johnson gets stuck in!

For the second time this season Olney could only muster the bare 15 for the East Midland Plate fixture at Huntingdon. Many players were in unaccustomed roles including a reshuffled pack with Facey at hooker, Pearson and Johnson drawn into the murky forward world as flankers, and Parkin at no. 8. Outside Evans and Lee the back line was chock full of wingers. Olney made a bright start and quickly showed that they were the dominant pack in the scrum and ruck, shoving the Huntingdon boys around the pitch. But once the Stags got their hands on the ball they gave it to their backs who cruised through the wide open spaces for the first score. Olney stormed back down to the Huntingdon try-line and won a 5-metre penalty. First Ashton, then Norman, came desperately close to scoring but were held up over the line. From the attacking scrum Parkin charged for the line but was stopped just short and lacked support players to drive him over. The loose ball was picked up by Huntingdon whose backs ran the length of the pitch to score a second try, converted from the touchline. Again Olney made good ground into the home team’s half but the ball was turned over and moved wide by Huntingdon to their winger who scored a converted try against a flat-footed defence. Still the Olney forwards were dominating the set pieces and there were fine interchanges of passing involving Lee, Miller and Ashton without quite breaking through the Huntingdon defence. Before the break the Stags ran in another try to maintain their record of scoring a try on every visit into the Olney half.

Olney were fired up after the break and Lee put a great kick up for the forwards to chase resulting in a penalty just outside the Huntingdon 22m line. Evans took it quickly and fed Norman, he timed his pass to flying prop Ashton who dived for the line in a clatter of cover tacklers and corner flag; he had certainly scored a try but lay injured for worrying minutes. The magic sponge was applied to great effect and Ashton sprinted back to the half way line ready for battle once more. Huntingdon were stung into action and after a period of constant pressure, and brave defence from the Olney backs and forwards alike, Huntingdon went over for a deserved try. It was probably down to fatigue that in the final three plays of the match Olney let Huntingdon score three more converted tries by simply failing to tackle their big runners.

A disappointing result but well done to all those who played, especially in unusual positions, which allowed the club to fulfil this fixture. The good news is that Huntingdon are due to visit the Rec at the end of April when Olney should be able to field a stronger team.
