A large number of available players prompted Olney to put out a 4th team for this week¡¦s fixtures, and it was this additional squad that made the trip up the A421 to Rushden & Higham.

On arrival, we were told that Rushden had failed to get a proper front-row together and that scrums would be uncontested from the outset.  This lead to some last minute re-jigging of positions by the captain.  The pitch was in a poor condition and the wind was blowing a gale but the team was up for the challenge.

Rushden kicked off and the ball was neatly gathered by somebody (I forget who) and spun out wide. A few moves later and Glyn Dodd was making his way over the try line with opposition players hanging off him.  The perfect start.
Because of the wind, the decision was taken before kick-off to keep the ball in hand and to not kick and this strategy was proving to be effective.  Olneys forwards were being aggressive and rucking over everything which gave an excellent platform for Lloyd Warn and the backs to quickly shift the ball.  Sticking to this plan, tries continued to come.

Pete Donavon, playing fullback, suffered a dead led 25 mins into the first half which saw him hobble from the field, not to return.  Olney played the remainder of the match with 14 men.

It was shortly after Pete¡¦s injury that Rushden scored their only try, making a break down the wing to scrape in by the corner flag.

The second half played out much the same as the first.  Olney scored more points that were unanswered by Rushden.  By the end of the match the score was 31-5.  The winning margin could have been more bar a couple of rookie errors under the posts (not properly touching down the ball) which were paid for by jugs in the bar afterward ƒº

Total commitment by the forwards was matched by hard running from the backs to produce an excellent team performance under difficult conditions.  Dan Payne stepping up to kick 3 excellent conversions in the ¡¥Force 8¡¦ that was sweeping across the pitch put the icing on the cake.
Glyn Dodd was ¡¥Man of the Match¡¦.
