With the news earlier this year that one of their key players was battling breast cancer, Olney Rugby Club’s Ladies Team pulled together and ran this year’s Race for Life at Campbell Park back in June.
With the sponsorship money now in, the ladies have raised a massive £1,600 for Cancer Research UK. Swapping their studs for trainers, and rucking for running, the ladies completed the course as a team in 33 minutes, and smashed their fundraising target of £500.
Tanya Cartmell, aged 36, plays second row for Olney Ladies and has been a key member of the team for over 4 years. Earlier this year Tanya discovered that she had breast cancer and is now undergoing treatment. Never one to be beaten, on or off pitch, Tanya is immensely positive and is proving an inspiration to everyone at the rugby club.

Captain Kath Hardwick said, “Rugby is a game rooted in team effort and camaraderie, so we wanted to do something positive as a team to help Tanya and the thousands of women who suffer from cancer. It was a fantastic day and running round in our rugby kit certainly grabbed the attention of many onlookers! I’d like to thank everyone who generously sponsored us.”
