Sevens Contest Deemed a Great Success! (July 12, 2007)
The first ever Olney Rugby Sevens tournament was held last week (Saturday 7 July) and was deemed to be a fantastic success from everyone who attended.
The two pools included teams coming from as far afield as Wales and the competition was nerve wracking as some games went right to the wire. A huge crowd of people turned out to support the event and watch the fantastic rugby on display.
The Abbey National team were commended for their "No Surrender" attitude to their games, with organisers commenting on their sporting play throughout.
The final game between the Rucku Spartans and Lady Rohesia Boat Club was a nail biting game of drama, pace and some incredible rugby skills. Hundreds of people lined the pitch to witness Lady Rohesia succeed in being the first winners of the Olney RFC Sevens Shield. Congratulations to them, and we hope they will be back in 2008 to defend their title.
The day could not have run smoothly without the immense support and commitment from our volunteers, namely:
- Olney Colts section, particularly Fran and Libby for running a superb BBQ throughout the day
- The Anti Social Committee, particularly Basher, for providing the bar
- Ladies team, Maddy and PC for pitch marshalling and Wiggy and Kerry for running the very popular inflatable games.
-
Junior section ball boys who kept the games running well
-
Keith McLean for organising the referees and co-ordinating the scoreboard
-
Dave Smith (Smudge) for liaising with all of the competing teams
-
Steve Gunther, Kellyann Davey and Kath Hardwick for organisation
