Bedfordshire Cup 30th March 2008
Olney Under 9's stormed their way to victory again this year at the Bedfordshire Cup hosted by Dunstable. Without conceeding a try a tremendous performance by all the squad attending.
Olney U16 v Bletchley U16s First league game
Following last weekend’s successful tournament Olney u16s started their league campaign with a game against Bletchley. Bletchley started very strongly and capitalised on Olney errors the first try coming from such an error after a ruck 5 metres out from the Olney line the ball was fumbled by the Olney flanker on his own try line to allow a quick Bletchley player to score. Bletchley continued with the upper hand and were soon 19 points up, but rather than letting their heads drop and accepting defeat Olney rallied and starting playing good rugby. They pressurised the Bletchley line for 15 minutes and finally got their reward when scrum half Ryan Wells shot from a ruck on Bletchley 5 metre line to score his first try.
The momentum of the game had changed and James George ran half the length of the pitch chasing Jonny Munday’s kick. His big tackle on Bletchley’s covering winger resulted in a 5metre scrum with a great pack drive forward causing Bletchley’s scrum half and back row to fumble the ball allowing scrum half Ryan Wells to dart over the line to score his second try.
Bletchley hit back with a couple of tries of there own and at half time the score was 24-10 to Bletchley.
The second half was a much more even affair with Bletchley opening the scoring and stretching their lead. To Olney’s credit the boys did not give up and pushed Bletchley the whole time with some good running from Nick Marlow and strong tackling from all the players.
The game ended with a fine try from Jonny Munday who cleverly chipped the ball into Bletchley’s 22, chased and caught his own kick to score.
A very good game with a total of 9 tries was played in good spirit. Special mention must go to Kieran Kawa and Oliver Harrison as they were playing in new positions and equipped themselves well.
Well done lads.

Olney hosted the first Alliance U7’s and U8’s Tag tournament last weekend with 12 teams in total playing for the U8’s Shield on what must have been the wettest and windiest day of the year.
Despite this, the day was a fantastic success for the kids and the club alike. The Olney Hawkes drew their first game then got into their stride and won all the remaining 4 games convincingly. Getting through on trys the Hawkes went on to win the U8’s tournament jointly with Old Northamptonians 4 – 4.

We would like to give a big thank you to all our sponsors, Michael Graham, Waitrose, Advison, Bodycraft, Dearden Trophies, Case, Seb Blore-Rimmer, O’Riordan Bond and Abbots, Club organisers and parents alike without whose funding and help we could not have run the tournament.
Bedford Festival Sunday 5th October 2008 - Olney Under 11's
Waking up to to terrential rain on the morning of the Bedford Festival did not bode well for the day and I think that most, if not all parents and coaches, were praying for the phone call to say that it was cancelled. However this was not to be so we all duly arrived at the allotted time – 9am (far too early as usual) and set up camp for the morning, fighting through the rain to set up the newly purchased and loaned Gazebos’. Oh boy, were they a Godsend.
We were down to play only two other sides in our Pool of teams. All this for less than half an hours actual play of rugby! – we must be round the hat rack to do this……… First match not till 10.45am and second at 11.45am.
By the end of the first match we were all like drowned rats and many of the other years, especially the younger ones who eventually packed up and gone home. We, however were there to stay, as wet as were going to get, so might as well stay for the duration.
Nearly lost the newly acquired Gazebo when it to ok off in a gust of wind (despite being pegged down) so moved it to a fresh piece of grass for us to trample in to mud…
The boys all played some excellent rugby despite the weather conditions and won the Plate by default because the opposition had packed up and gone home. (Shows we have staying power!!) They made it in to the MK Citizen with the following:
The U11s played two matches, winning 4-0 against Tigers and drawing 0-0 against Old Albanians B and their tries came from Ollie Clark, Jonathan Hulley, Eddie Goss and Jake Rigby.
Well done to all the boys (and parents) who stuck it out, the conditions were absolutely appalling but if they have the stamina to see that out they should go far this season……..

Kettering Festival – Sunday 12th October 2008
What a difference a week makes!
The morning of the Kettering Festival is foggy but with the promise of sunshine later………
As usual arrival time far too early, 9am because Registration is by 9.30am. Better this week with three matches in both Pool of teams. However here we go again first match not till 10.30am second at 11.30am and quite surprisingly third at 12.00noon.
Kick off is late as usual which sets Paul James, Head Coach, off in his usual mutterings about time keeping! Good thing though fog burning off and sunshine coming through…. Gazebo up today for a very different reason - to keep the sunshine off the boys rather than the rain!
First match is against Old Scouts, a well drilled team and difficult to beat. Paul Hulley is Olney’s’ reluctant volunteer as touch judge for the game and does an excellent job. Olney boys play out of their skin throughout the match and it is a 0-0 draw at the final whistle. Paul James can’t praise the boys highly enough and they are ready for match number two against Huntingdon with Mr Hulley appointed touch judge for the rest of the morning…… Again the boys play exceptionally well and win by ?3-0. Try scoring by …………….. Short pause then on to match number three, Dunstablians. Again fantastic play winning by ?1-0 with the Try scored by ?...........
Wow three matches played and not one Try scored against us! Confirmed that we are runners up in our Pool B. Well done lads.
The next match we are drawn against is ONs the winners of Pool A. Again this is a well drilled team but Paul James is confident that we can do well. The boys have had an excellent mornings rugby and they just need to sustain this momentum. The boys play some really good rugby again and cannot be faulted however they are pitted against a good side and finish by loosing 0-4.
For various reasons we have had a squad of 14 to day and by the end of this last match we have several walking wounded. All the boys are disappointed that they have not come away with any silver but they have all given their all this morning and should be proud of the way they have played. I think if they had won this match they would have struggled to raise a team for the final!
With two festivals so early in the season the boys have applied themselves really well and if they carry on in this vein we will be seeing some great rugby from them this season….
Glad we now have a week off Parent
